Make Things
I saw this photo on Facebook today and immediately made it my desktop wallpaper. “Make things” are two words I live by.
But today, I am not making things.
Today, I’m a consumer reading thrilling serialized fiction by Sean Platt and David Wright. Their latest book, Available Darkness is a new kind of vampire story full of action, surprising cliffhangers, and characters you will fall in love with. I’m pretty sure I will finish reading season two tonight…
Make things. But don’t forget to enjoy the things others around you are creating.
I read this as I was “cooking” my first batch of “mash” as part of my first flirtation with home beer brewing. I would throw that in the bucket of “making things” — I think (though it will be a month before I can see how successful I was).
You’re absolutely right, though. Beyond the beer, I’ve spent the better part of the last two weeks thinking about my writing and my music — both of which have taken a back seat to other things. Neither good nor bad — it’s just what happens when you have other commitments taking priority.
But it has made me think about the power of creativity on a grander scale. What if more people dabbled in the world of making things. Big and small; consumable in all different kinds of ways. I think it could quite transformational — culturally, socially, economically… you name it.
Keep up the great work, Jarkko!
Thanks, Bill! That’s a great thought, and I agree.
There is huge amounts of unused potential for creativity in the 7 billion of us. Taking it all into use would probably be dangerous—we might not like all of it, and the world would very likely change a lot. It could be the next big switch in human history…
I would love to see it!
And I’m happy to hear you are trying home brewing. It’s one of the many things on the list of things I would love to try… :)
