This is something I really try to practice on a regular basis.
At work, I focus on one major task, knock it down and move on. I never feel busy or too trapped for time (I have too much time actually) and it’s all attributed to not overfilling my schedule and plate, and making sure that I make time for myself.

Hehe, skimming and rushing through things seems to have become the default mode of operation on the web. I wonder if it’s the medium itself that is doing it or what — the feeling just is completely different from for example reading a book…

Interestingly enough, I never knew you had a second blog for different content. I suppose I haven’t been reading long enough! I totally agree with you – A couple of years back I was working on a project with too short a timeline and not enough resources. The only way to survive (mentally intact!) when life demands more than you have is to commit to only focusing on one thing at a time. I learned that if I was working on a report, then I should focus only on that, if someone was speaking to me, I would practice good listening, if I was walking between buildings, I would enjoy my walk. Life was a lot more pleasant, and my output was much higher quality than it would have possibly been otherwise.
Now of course, the trick is to keep that presence of mind when two or more things are pulling at you. I find meditation helps, and so does the practice of continual presence of mind.

Focus definitely is something you need to keep practicing. I haven’t really tried meditation yet (I’m afraid I will just fall asleep ;)) but minimalism has been a helpful approach for me. But I must confess, I’m still terrible at focusing…

But what really caught me about your post, for whatever reason, is the difficulty in getting those bigger writing projects done. I am so happy for blogs because otherwise I would have written next to nothing. But the easy ability to write small ideas and share them has allowed me to get in that habit. And over time that has provided a long term focus on many of the ideas I think about in a way I would not have had without this outlet.
