It is easier to focus on some extrinsic goal such as a few more dollars or a treat. And I believe many people lose a sense of powerful intrinsic motivation as they focus too much on surface matters and too little on being self aware. This reinforces a focus on extrinsic motivation as they don't understand how to explore how to cultivate intrinsic motivation. Motivation is complex.
