What are you insanely interested in?
Lately I’ve been asking this question a lot.
I ask it in interviews (yeah, there are more of them coming up).
I ask it from my friends.
And most of all, from myself.
I’ll share some of my own thoughts later this month but now it’s your turn to be the person being interviewed. Take two minutes and come up with your own answers to one or more of these questions:
- What are you insanely interested in?
- How did you become interested in that thing?
- Why are you interested in it?
- What will make this September insanely interesting for you?
Answer one of the questions, two of them, or if you have time, all of them. Then share your thoughts in the comments and check out what others have said!
This month we’re celebrating Insanely Interesting September. Check out the announcement and participate in the group writing project: What do you find interesting today? What makes this September the most interesting so far? Why are you insanely interested in something? Share your thoughts and see what others have written.

Okay, here it comes :)
1. I’m insanely interested in playing piano, mostly classic..
2. I’ve been interested in playing piano for about seven years but this summer the thing that really stroke me and made me try harder and practice more was a japanese tv-drama: Nodame Cantabile. I realized that if I really want to become good some day, I must practice, there’s no other way.. The tv-show also encouraged me and fed my enthusiasm so that I became to like classic music and began to understand music more, I really started to enjoy playing the piano! It was great.
3. That’s a bit more difficult question. Propably because I like playing the piano, the more I play, the more excited I get and it’s just so great fun! Another reason is that when playing the piano you can never get so good that you may think that you handle it perfectly, there are always new things to discover and to learn. Piano is also an instrument that evolvs with the pianist and it’s just unbelievable how great sounds you can get out of it. I wouldn’t have believed when I first started with ‘Ukko Nooa’ and ‘Kissan polkka’ (They are very simple finnish songs) that someday I could play Beethoven, Mozart and other great pieces of famous composers.. And still, I have so many things to learn, it feels like I could learn piano my whole life and still I wouldn’t know all of it. That’s why I’m interested in it, insanely!
4. This september has been a very interesting month so far, but all the best things are still to come! My japanese lessons are going to start tomorrow, which is pretty cool. I’m also going to start taking driving lessons this month.(or next month.. it depends on many things..) That’s interesting because I have never driven car before.. I’m not sure how I’m going to handle it ;) School is also interesting, being with friends and discovering new stuff about biology or physics, it’s great! And of course all the ‘normal’ stuff that can be watched with eyes of a foreiger or a tourist. I have done it quite a long time and discovered a lot of great stuff of my town and country!
Wehee, quite a long comment :D Thanks for your blog Jarkko! It has been inspiring and even fun to read it so far, keep up the good work! ;)
This september is insanely interesting for me becuase I have just formed a manufacturer’s rep agency, Vision Market Development! And not only that, but I will also be writing my first article on Small Business Trends as a Small Biz Expert!
BTW, Congrats on 121 subscribers, Jarkko!
Tiitus: Thanks for your awesome comment. It’s exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for (although shorter comments are appreciated as well :)
It seems that everyone in the family is speaking about “Nodame Cantabile” - I suppose it must be good if even mom and dad were interested enough to watch it twice! Once we’re done with Hana Yori Dango 2, Mari and I will have to check it out as well.
It’s great to hear that your piano enthusiasm is growing - keep playing! And have a really interesting September! (We’ll meet on Saturday then)
Graham: That’s really great! It seems that your business is really taking off as well as your web presence! “Small Biz Expert” sure sounds professional.
Thanks for the congrats, and congrats to you as well!
1. There are couple of things that I’m insanely interested in but for example sports is one of them. I’m into endurance sports like marathon. Also participated to my first (but definately no last) triathlon this summer.
2. I have a family member who is very good at both sports. So perhaps that was a bit of an influence for me. Then I just decided to join the local marathon school and the goal was to run Helsinki City Marathon in 2006. Thus, I made an new year resolution in 2005/2006 New Years Eve that I will finish my first marathon that year :)
3. After running my first marathon last year it gave me such an boost to self confidence that I wanted to train even more and make better results. So it’s really the awesome feeling after crossing the finish line. Or if not after crossing the finish line then at least the next day. Then you finally realize your accomplishment ;) Also, pushing yourself to the limit is also something that is rewarding afterwards.
4. My goal is to run under four hours time in a marathon contest held at the end of this month.
Sports - it has truly changed my life more than I imagined during these two years. Lot’s of good things have happened to me because of it and I hope that I continue to be heavily involved with it in the future too.
Hey, Timo! Thanks for the great comment.
Running a Marathon has since long been a dream of mine. I really admire the thought of enduring the pain for that long - and then finally reaching the finishing line. It just sounds like such a great accomplishment.
So far I haven’t had the discipline to get it done though… So, to me it’s still only a dream.
That’s why I really need to congratulate you! Great job! And it’s great to hear that you still enjoy it so much.
PS. Keep an eye on today’s post… You might be surprised to see what the topic is ;) Both you and Tiitus.
Ok, my turn:
1. What are you insanely interested in?
Hockey. I love ice hockey.
2. How did you become interested in that thing?
I grew up in Montreal, Canada, it’s the local religion.
3. Why are you interested in it?
See above. Plus my team, the Montreal Canadiens are the best historically and I really got hooked in 1986 while watching them unexpectedly win the Stanley Cup.
4. What will make this September insanely interesting for you?
The new NHL season starts the first week of October and so all the teams are now playing exhibition games. Can’t wait.
Thanks for sharing!
Ice hockey is really popular here in Finland as well, although I don’t really follow it that much myself :) Have fun watching the games!
Its difficult to remember all….every time my tempermant changes my “insane” interest changes…although i wil still b interested…to a lesser degree….after something else comes along…;0.. i have made a file…i put paper and note of all my insane interests…i have an idea incubator…a feasibilty study center and implementation diagrams for most of my insanity….
