Good advice Jarkko! I’ve been doing this for nine years and I find it hard to even think about becoming an employee again.
I like the use of your word “contractor” and it gives new freelancer’s something to keep in mind; build your business through contracted projects.
Although “contractor” may be associated with plumbers, electricians, and carpenters—especially on the web, that’s what we freelancer’s are those that build Internet homes and keep them running from front to back.
My experience with freelancing has led me to understand its all about the clients. Difficult clients can really mess you up and make freelancing less profitable. But, you have to take the bad with the good.
Freelancing is “all about the clients” but you don’t have to take the bad with the good. One of the great things about freelancing is that you can choose who you will work for. A few quick questions on client inquiry go a long way to sorting the wheat from the chaff.

I hate to do this – but I totally have to agree with you Jarkko – freelancing is a bit like the wild west – the last refuge of the original handyman. Larger companies have a very significant reason for specializing their departments, it is easier to manage. Problem is one can get pigeon holed. It is almost never booring as a freelancer. Every day changes.
On the other hand – the opportunity for burnout is signficiant. Peter’s been pushing one of our teems really hard (we all agreed ot it up front and knew what we were getting into) and at 3am last night had to write himself a post to remember the freedom’s of freelancing. Otherwise, you can work the fun out of life itself. I am the most demanding bosses I ever had – and I am sure most of you can relate to that fact, or you probably wouldn’t be in business.
I think Shane hit the nail on the head when he said, “the opportunity for burnout is significance.”
A line in an old Clint Eastwood movie says, “A man’s got to understand his limitations.”
One of the biggest problems I face in freelance is saying “no”. You always hate to turn away a new client that looks promising and you always hate to refuse work from established clients. You know they are going to get it done someplace and you don’t want them to find greener pastures. However, you have to say know or you’ll bite off more than Clint could spit. (I hope you guys saw that movie!)
One solution is to always ask clients when they need the work. Sometimes it’s something like “yesterday”, but if they are good clients who want to use your services, they’ll give you some leeway to fit their project into your schedule.
The longer I freelance, the more I believe that keeping communication open and honest is the key to successful freelance.
