You would assume that people living this north would get used to the fact that winter comes every year. I don’t know how it is in places like Canada, Sweden or Russia, but at least here in Finland winter gets us by surprise every time. People realize that the roads are slippery only after the first few yearly accidents. And even after that it takes a while before we take action and switch to winter tires.
Back in August I posted some thoughts on why we need to start practicing our risk management skills by taking responsibility on our personal lives. Yesterday I was given a chance to practice what I preach: For the first time in my life I was among the first people to switch to winter tires.
It took me 45 minutes but now I can safely leave for Jyväskylä for the weekend.
While working on my car this post idea started to brew in my mind. While slippery roads are a major risk at this time of the year in Finland there are many other risks around us all the time. Here’s a list of 21 every day risks and ideas on how you can manage them.
- You get into a car accident: Make sure your car is in a good condition. Switch to winter tires early enough.
- You get into a bike accident: Wear a helmet.
- There is a fire in your house: Check your fire alarm periodically to make sure it works.
- You get fired: Save money so you can get by until you find a new job. Or better yet, have additional income streams to make you independent from your employer.
- The world runs out of energy: Save energy, try to live frugally.
- The world goes into a crisis because of our CO2 emissions: Save energy, recycle, find ways to be more green.
- You miss an important appointment: Leave early so you have time in case you are delayed by something like a delayed bus.
- You forget to buy a birthday present to your wife: Buy the present early when you still remember it.
- You get addicted to World of Warcraft: Don’t play World of Warcraft.
- Your kids start to hate you: Spend time with your kids when they are young. Don’t spend your life only working.
- You run out of toilet paper: Buy toilet paper when you notice that there are only a few rolls left.
- You run out of gas on the road: Fill up your gas tank when it’s half empty.
- You are tired in the morning: Get to bed early.
- You don’t understand what a police officer is trying to tell you when he stops you in Paris: Learn French.
- You need to introduce two people to each other but you have forgotten their names: Try using Scott’s tricks for remembering names.
- You get demented at old age: Exercise your brain now so that it’s in a better condition to start with.
- You die young: Cherish your loved ones today.
- You lose your phone: Have some money with you so you can call from a pay phone.
- There is a shortage of electricity: Always have a flashlight somewhere close.
- You run out of coffee: Free yourself from your caffeine addiction.
- You miss your favorite TV show: Record the show if there is a risk that you can’t make it to see it.
And now it’s your turn:
What risks can you think of that might occur to you in your every day life? And how can you prepare for them? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.
