Insanely Interesting Links: Post #100

It seems that this is your first time to my blog. Welcome! In this blog I will share my ideas on how you can make a living in a way that feels good to you, your family, your environment and everyone around you. If you want to know more about me and this blog, check out my about page. And if you want to stay updated on my new posts, subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for stopping by!

You are now reading the 100th post here at Jarkko Laine dot com, and we’re just five comments away from 450. It’s nothing huge but nevertheless an important milestone for me. Thanks for helping me get this far!

Analyzing my blog

A few days ago Naomi Dunford from IttyBiz wrote a case Study on my blog. She describes a case study to be something like a review but with a more positive tone:

Case studies are a little different from reviews in that they’re generally pretty positive. If we think your site sucks, we’re not going to broadcast that all over the Internet and then take your money. What we do is highlight your business and it’s positives, with some ideas for avenues for improvement.

It’s always interesting to hear what others think of your work, and I think Naomi did a good job in finding the key points from this blog. But most importantly the case study made me realize that I really need to update my about page, which says that:

This blog is all about creating software in a honest way that is good for you, your environment, your family, your customer and all the people around you.

But when was the last time I wrote about software? I guess I would have saved Naomi a lot of headache if I would have replaced “creating software” with something more generic. Big thanks to Naomi, and if you’re interested in getting a case study from her, check out her blog and send her a note.

Guest Posts

Guest posting is a great way of connecting with other bloggers. I am always on the lookout for new guest blogging opportunities in interesting blogs so I was really happy when Ravi Vora suggested a round of switching blog posts.

My guest post, “I guess it wasn’t meant to be” was published at Ravi Vora’s blog last Sunday. And Ravi returned the favor on Tuesday with a a great post about being insanely interesting: “You don’t have to be a rock star to be Insanely Interesting“.

If you’d like to guest blog at my blog or have me guest blog on yours, e-mail me and we can talk more about the details.

Interesting Links

And finally, it’s time to share the insanely interesting links of the week. Like always, here are some picks from the RSS feeds I’m reading, and feel free to add your suggestions in the comments as well.

  1. The Blog Action Day is getting closer. If you have a blog and haven’t yet decided to join the project, it’s still not too late. Mark October 15th in your calendar, register your blog at the Blog Action Day website and join the forces with other 6,914 blogs (the number is growing all the time) to make a difference.
  2. Ravi Vora proves that you don’t have to be good looking to be successful. Not even in Hollywood. And while you’re at it, check out Ravi’s older post about super heroes and their weaknesses. I just can’t help but admire the way he uses imagery to support his point.
  3. My friend Joona (also known as C2162) has written a post about why people choose brands instead of anonymous products.
  4. Yesterday I found my way to a new blog on journaling called Journal Writing Topics. Here’s an interesting post from the blog:
Five Simple Things You Can Do To Spark Your Journaling.
  5. And while this hasn’t been a software blog in a long time, it’s nice to bring up some more nerdy topics every now and then. A friend of mine is working on his Master’s Thesis in Computer Science and blogging about the progress. Interesting reading for students planning to start working on their Thesis.

Have a relaxing weekend, and see you on Monday!

The new layout rocks. It’s more logical and lighter to browse.

Anyway, I would increase the contrast on the bottom of the page (Topics, Archives, etc.). Now it’s a bit pale, and probably too grey, too. But for the moment, it’ll do!

Thanks for the feedback, and I’m happy you like the new layout!

I will have to take a look at how the page looks on different displays to see if I need to change the colors on the footer… I like the way it looks on my laptop, but I guess it might look too gray on some other monitor.

    Congrats on the 100th post.

    Thanks for the mention!
