The Coffee Sage, insanely interested in coffee

Today we’re chatting with Audrey, the Coffee Sage, as she calls herself.

Audrey has been a fan of coffee since an early age, and nowadays hosts a blog about her adventures in the world of coffee. In her blog Audrey writes coffee reviews, stories about coffee and tips for other coffee lovers.

She also writes about tea, which she says is always good — but not quite as exciting as coffee.

Jarkko: What’s the story between you and coffee? How did it all start?

Audrey: It all started on long fishing trips when I was a young gal. Yep, boiled campfire coffee. Mud. Black oily gold.

But once you adjust to that, anything is better. My love only grew from there on.

Jarkko: Where did you get the idea to start blogging about coffee?

Audrey: I wanted to blog and tried different subjects but then one day I realized that I needed to actually blog about something I knew a bit about. Coffee! So, I set it up and got to work on it.

Jarkko: What have been the biggest learnings or AHA moments when blogging about coffee?

Audrey: My biggest AHA has been finding out just how many ways you can roast and brew a coffee bean. Growing up there was just Cain’s or Folgers but now… the world is my bean.

Jarkko: On your blog you do coffee reviews. How does it work?

Audrey: I get a lot of requests to sample and write reviews.

A company is required to send full size products for review. I try coffee in different ways. Espresso, brewed, some times cold brewed or with a drip but I mainly use a French press. I require 3 weeks to get a review up. I get behind a lot. Seems as though it all comes at one time, not one at a time. If machine type products are sent for review, I either set it back for later use, give it away in contests, or donate it to my church.

Jarkko: To most people coffee is just a beverage among others, to you it seems to be something more important? How do you maintain your interest towards it from day to day?

Audrey: It is not difficult to maintain interest. There are so many origins of beans, so many roasts and blends, it would just be near impossible to get bored or tired of it not to mention all the different coffee drinks there are to try, create, or discover.

My latest discovery has been home roasting. I’m still very new at it but I am learning. I will begin to write about it soon.

Jarkko: Are there other things competing with coffee to get to this special place?

Audrey: My family and animals but I would say, more so my animals. They are needy. My family is not. Too bad coffee is not good for them or they would all have personalized coffee bowls.

Jarkko: Do you family members share your coffee enthusiasm?

Audrey: My husband does but not in the same way that I love coffee. It is either good or bad for him, but for me it gets more complex.

Jarkko: During the insanely interesting September I’m asking all my guests this same question: What will make this September even more interesting than the previous months?

Audrey: Hmmm… well, someone could send me a nice, high quality espresso machine to review! hint hint…

Jarkko: If I would go out for a cup of coffee with you, what kind of coffee would you suggest?

Audrey: A good African bean, roasted that very day. Nothing better than that.

Jarkko: Sounds delicious!

Audrey: There is nothing like fresh. It is robust, rich, and really hard to describe. It lingers in your mouth and on your taste buds but once a coffee bean peaks, somewhere around 4 to 6 days, it begins to lose that zing it started out with.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had good pre-ground coffee or take Starbucks for instance… there is no telling how long those bags have set around before they finally made it to the brewer. You see? It is still ‘good’ but not like it could be if they roasted in each store.

Jarkko: And before finishing up, is there something you’d still like to say to the readers?

Audrey: Tea is good but nothing compares to a fine, fresh roasted shot of espresso. I want to taste it all, one cup at a time!
