Best TreeHugger articles for software developers
It seems that this is your first time to my blog. Welcome! In this blog I will share my ideas on how you can make a living in a way that feels good to you, your family, your environment and everyone around you. If you want to know more about me and this blog, check out my about page. And if you want to stay updated on my new posts, subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for stopping by!
With over 40 writers and more than 31,000 RSS subscribers TreeHugger is one of the biggest blogs focusing on green issues today. And that position is well earned: TreeHugger is a great resource with lots of information, including tips for greening different areas of your life and news on the latest happenings on the green front.
While all of this is a great thing, it can also be a weakness. I am subscribed to the TreeHugger RSS feed and as it sends 27 updates to my direction every day, it gets hard to keep track of what’s being written. For a new reader going through all the existing content can be even more challenging.
To help you find the most interesting information out of the huge pile of more than 18,000 articles I decided to collect a list of some of my favorites for you to explore. Here it goes:
Go Green
A good place to start your trip to TreeHugger would be the Go Green category which contains practical tips for greening your life in many different fronts. These are the most interesting articles for software developers:
- How to go green: Back to basics
- How to green your electronics
- How to green your work
- How to green your lighting
- How to green your public transportation
You’ll notice that many of the ideas that I’ve been bringing up in my Green Programmer articles have been partly inspired by the above how-to articles. But these five articles aren’t all that the go green archive has to offer. There are many more how-to articles, and if you have time I suggest you read them all.
Peak Oil
One of today’s most interesting topics for the society as a whole but even more for us information workers is the availability of energy in the future. If we run out of oil, as it looks like we will sooner rather than later, we should really start looking at alternatives. TreeHugger keeps us posted on this topic as well. Here are a few articles to get you started:
- IEA sounds peak oil alarm
- The coming decline of oil
- Why peak oil is like cool beer
- Kunstler: Oil prices to rise sooner than later
- A glimpse into the green future of entertainment technology
Being green at work
Last but not least, my favorite green topic: how to be greener in your work place and still be able to use computers, Internet and all the other things we hold so dear. It might not be possible, but here’s some inspiration:
- Black Google would save 750 Megawatt-hours a year
- Extreme telecommuting - it’s not what dad did
- You decide: Turn on the lights or hang up your jacket
- More details on carbon neutral PC
- Nintendo: Greening the game industry
- The cheaper PC, the smaller PC, and the greener PC
- How green are computer makers?

Now that’s a great list of articles! Must have taken long time to collect them all. By the way, oil prices climbed to a new all-time record two days ago. And this time without the help of any natural/man made disasters. We’re living very interesting times indeed…
The articles above provide a great tool to conserve energy and help us to ease the tight situation at least a little. I hope as many people as possible will take notice and wake up from the dream of consumerism and start using energy less wastefully.
Keep up the good work, Jarkko. :)

Thanks Jetro!
It’ll sure be interesting to see what happens in the coming years… Maybe it’s like a disaster movie - and we’re the main characters in it ;)
